Your Life Assessment

Jan 08, 2026

To start the new year, take inventory of your life by completing a life assessment.  This will help you get clear on where you are and what you want to work on this year.

Assessment

Complete an assessment of where you currently are in your life by rating 7 areas of your life on a scale of 0 unhappy, needs work to 10 happy, completely fulfilled in this area.  These 7 areas will be detailed below.  Then, choose one area that you want to work on in the new year.  There will be ideas about how you can improve each area of your life in the descriptions of each area below.  Let’s get started!

Environment

Your environment is your surroundings to include your house, car, office or workspace, etc.  You spend a lot of time here.  If you want to improve this area of your life in the new year, you might decide to redecorate, remodel, move, clean, organize, get something new that brightens your space and makes you happy.

Mental Wellbeing

Your mental wellbeing is all about your mindset, personal development, growth, and learning to become better.  If you want to work on this area of your life, perhaps you enroll in a class, find a mentor, coach, etc.  Maybe you create a challenge for yourself to use a meditation app daily, read a certain number of books for personal growth, commit to doing something new each month, etc.  Discover ways you can enhance your mental wellbeing so that you can learn and grow in the new year.

Physical Health

Perhaps it’s your physical heath that you want to work on in the new year.  Maybe that’s getting in shape, eating heathier, etc.  If you want to make progress in this area of your life, you can meal plan each week, purchase a gym membership and commit to going a certain number of times each week, use an app on your phone to exercise, hire a physical trainer, walk a certain number of steps a day, reduce your sugar, cut out alcohol, etc.  Find ways that you can improve your physical health in the new year.  When you do, you’ll notice that your mental wellbeing also improves because you’re happier and more confident in yourself.

Relationships

Maybe you’re feeling a bit distant from your friends and family lately.  It could be that you want to reconnect and build healthier relationships in the new year.  You can do this by planning a weekly date night with your spouse, calling a relative each week, going to coffee with a friend each month, planning a game night, going on vacation with friends or family, etc.  You might also need to set some boundaries with your friends or family because it’s been stressing you out by consuming too much of your energy.  You might need to limit your time with certain friends or family and start putting your needs first.  Remember, this is all about how you can do something that will improve your life in the new year.  You get to choose how you want to show up, be present, and available for the most important relationships in your life.

Hobbies

You might want to pick up a new hobby in the new year.  This could be doing something that evokes a memorable time from your childhood like singing, dancing, drawing, painting, etc.  Find something that’s creative, rewarding, challenging, and makes you feel proud of for doing.  Hobbies aren’t a waste of time.  In fact, hobbies are something that can make you feel fulfilled and keep you going by giving you something to look forward to when you’re stuck in your day to day routine.

Finance

Perhaps you want to focus on your finances in the new year.  Whether that’s saving money for retirement, a fun getaway, a big purchase, rainy day emergency fund, etc.  Getting focused on saving money by putting away a certain percentage or dollar amount each week or month can really boost your financial security.  Maybe you start looking into investing a small amount of money yourself, purchasing a cd, opening a high yield savings account, earning points or cash back on everyday purchases with a rewards card, start a small side gig for some extra spending money, etc.  It’s also important to look at how you can cut expenses on frivolous things, unsubscribing from subscriptions you forgot about or no longer use, giving yourself a budget, keeping an eye on your finances by tracking your expenses, etc.  If you want to increase your wealth, you have to pay attention to what’s coming in and what’s going out.

Career

The last area of this life assessment is your career.  This is your daily J-O-B.  If this area you choose that needs work, find out how you can make it more fulfilling for you.  Maybe your current job feels unfulfilled but it pays the bills.  Perhaps your current job is super stressful or you’re underpaid.  It could be that you’ve been working towards a promotion.  Or, you might be taking a leap of faith and completely switching careers in the new year.  Discover ways you can improve your job by reducing your stress, finding an outlet for your negativity, possibly learn to delegate more, become a better leader, or find the courage to branch out on your own.  You get to decide what you do with your life.

These are all the ways you can help take care of yourself in the new year.  Set yourself up for success by completing the life assessment.  Then, choose one area you want to focus on this year.  You should not try and work on every single one of these areas.  In fact, it’s better if you just laser focus on one area of improvement and go all in on that one area.  You’ll see more progress than trying to add too many new things to your plate.  Pick one area and one thing you’re going to commit to doing in the new year to improve your life.

Take Action Challenge

Your Life Assessment Reset

Step 1: Rate Your Life

Rate each of the 7 areas detailed above (Environment, Mental Wellbeing, Physical Health, Relationships, Hobbies, Finances, Career) from 0–10 based on how fulfilled you feel right now.

Step 2: Choose ONE Focus Area

Circle the lowest-scoring area or the one that feels most urgent.  Commit to working on just this one area for the next 30 days.

Step 3: Pick ONE Simple Commitment

Ask yourself, if I focused on only ONE habit, action, or boundary in this area, what would move the needle most?

Examples:

  • Environment → declutter one space each weekend

  • Mental wellbeing → 10 minutes of journaling or reading daily

  • Relationships → one intentional connection each week

Step 4: Make It Visible

Write your one commitment somewhere you’ll see it daily.  Maybe that's in your planner, wallpaper on your phone, or a sticky note on your bathroom mirror.  You'll constantly be reminded to take one small action to support this area of your life.

Remember, you don’t need to overhaul your entire life.  One intentional focus area with one small action, done consistently, can change everything this year.
