The Power Of Music

Jul 26, 2018

Have you ever heard a song and all of a sudden you’re singing along, transported back in time to when you first heard that tune?  You can remember hearing Taylor Swift for the first time as you as you drive down the 101 on a hot, sunny day.  Soon you’ve got all her albums and memorized the lyrics to put on your best performance as you sing into your fist microphone.  It takes you back to when you were a child and dreamed of being a singer.  Where you were holding live concerts in your bedroom and honing your vocal skills.  That is the power of music.

Music is a transformational outlet.  Today I find myself singing along in the car or in a store when a tune comes on that I can’t resist lip syncing too.  Music holds a deep personal connection for all of us.

What you decide to listen to will often depend on your mood.  If you’re feeling nostalgic you may choose something from your younger years like a boy band where you know all the lyrics.  Maybe you’re feeling sad and choose an instrumental piece or something melancholy.  Perhaps you’re in a bad mood and put on rap or heavy metal.  You may simply put on the latest pop tunes for some background music to see what’s popular right now.  Country music often tells a story during the song.  Don’t forget all the musicals and Disney tunes we have committed to memory.  There are so many genres to choose from.  Allow yourself just to feel and let go of your current mood through the power of music.

The truth is, music evokes an emotion in us that recalls memories.  Our brain holds so much information, including the lines to the music from our youth.

Studies have been conducted on the effects of music with dementia and Alzheimer’s patients that show music increases brain activity.  Seeing patients who are struggling with memory know the melody and smilingly sway, happy in that moment.  Our mind is a powerful tool and when it fails us we are lost.  Bring more happiness into you life with the power of music.

Use the power of music to manage stress with music that puts you into a meditative state.  Tranquil music is often played at doctor’s offices and spas to relax you.  Instrumental music lets your mind wander and dream of the future.  Music can shift your mood and boost your spirts when you’re feeling down.  Some music you just can’t help but smile to the upbeat tempo.  Other times it’s anger and frustration that needs to be released as the lyrics blast through the stereo speakers.

So, what kind of music do you need right now?  Perhaps it’s something to energize you.  That will get you inspired, empowered, and motivated.  Sports arenas across the country use music to hype up their players and audience.  A certain song can put you in the right mental zone to crush the task ahead.  I’ve created my energy playlist.  These are songs I use to give me extra motivation and confidence.
