Achieving your goals can feel overwhelming with the amount of stuff you have to do. It just feels too big that there is too much to do. Therefore, it becomes easier to just do nothing instead of doing the difficult work to achieve your goals. Learn to love to take action towards your goals so that you can create the momentum you need to achieve what you want to accomplish in your life.
The first step in feeling less overwhelmed to achieve your goals is to get all of the tasks out of your head and down on paper. Stop letting those tasks swirl around in your head as you worry that you might forget to do something. Take time to write down all the things you have been putting off that you need to get done. Visually seeing what you need to do automatically lets your brain relax. It’s almost like a giant sigh for your brain. You no longer need to stress out about forgetting anything. Your brain will love you for writing everything down and keeping it organized in one place.
Next, take a look at your list and see if any of the tasks you wrote down feels overwhelming. If so, break the task down into smaller pieces. Every big goal is made up of many small steps. Ignore the part of your brain that thinks otherwise. Taking tiny steps to achieve your goals is what matters! Then, organize your small steps by importance. Prioritize the tasks that must get done and actually move the needle to achieve your goals. Make it a game to complete at least one small action step towards your goal each day. You’ll love crossing things off your to do list and take pride in not breaking the daily action step chain.
Now, the fun part! Take action even if you’re scared. Unless, the task is life threatening and dangerous then please don’t! But, in all other cases, you will feel amazing when you complete an action item that you were afraid to do. Remember a time you tried something new that you were scared of and felt exhilarated afterward? Maybe that was trying a new physical activity like rock climbing or something simpler like a new food. You realized you lived and it wasn’t so bad after all. In fact, you may have wanted to do it again! Use this high as your motivation to take action through the fear. Recalling this exhilarating feeling will help you learn to love to take action towards your goals.
Not all action steps are going to go so well. You may try and fail or embarrass yourself. Do not let that discourage you. You shouldn’t give up or quit just because things didn’t work out the first time. See this as a challenge and keep going! Recall that exhilarated feeling when you successfully completed something you’ve been trying so hard to achieve. Each time you try, you’re gaining new knowledge, evidence, and feedback to make adjustments for next time. You’re learning as you go and that’s nothing to be scared of. Become a student and start loving to learn!
Every time you take action towards your goal, you’re building confidence. You’re building confidence in yourself that you can figure things out. Even if things don’t go your way, you have the confidence to believe in yourself and your goals to keep going. Fear will always be there but you can pull from your inner confidence that there are lessons to be learned. Learn to love to take action towards your goals because it means that you’re becoming better, learning, and growing in the process. The best part is when you finally achieve your goal and you look back to where you started. You will be so incredibly proud of yourself for all your hard work, dedication, and perseverance to keep going instead of giving up on your goals. You’ll realize just how far you’ve come and everything you’ve learned along the way.
Lastly, if you really want to see just how far you’ve come to achieve your goals then keep a journal. Journal about all your progress, setbacks, and lessons learned. Keep track of your mood, how you felt, your emotions, and what was going through your mind at that time. You’ll see your struggles and your achievements. Rereading this journal will make you feel all sorts of emotions from when you experienced tough times to celebrating your successes. A journal can be an incredible piece to documenting your journey to learning to love to take action towards your goals.
Achieving your goals doesn’t always go as planned. There are times when you’ll make mistakes. But, the key is to keep going and not give up. Learn to love to take action towards your goals. You do this by remembering this is a journey and not an easy one. It’s full of challenges and lessons to learn. However, everything you do is helping you become your future self and eventually get you to achieve your goals. Stop being afraid to take action towards your goals. Get out there on the path and take action! You may not exactly love it but you will learn from it and that will shape who you become in the future.
Step 1: Get It Out Of Your Head
Choose one goal you're currently working towards.
Write down every task, idea, errand, or action you think you need to take to move you closer to that goal.
Don't organize it yet. Just get it all out of your head and onto paper.
Step 2: Shrink The Steps
Look at your list and find the tasks that feel overwhelming.
For each one, ask yourself what is the smallest possible action that you could take to get started?
Break the big task into tiny, manageable steps. Remember that big goals are achieved through small actions.
Step 3: Choose Your Daily Action
Pick one small action off your list to move you closer to your goal.
Make it so doable that you have very little reason not to do it.
Your goal isn't to finish everything.
Your goal is to keep moving.
Challenge yourself to take at least one action toward your goal every day for the next week.
Step 4: Create Your Action High
Think about a time when you were nervous or scared to try something new but did it anyway.
Remember that feeling afterward.
The excitement, pride, relief, or exhilaration of realizing you actually did it!
Write down how you felt.
When you're tempted to avoid an action this week, remind yourself of that feeling and use it as motivation to take the next step.
Step 5: Learn From What Happens
At the end of each day, take a few minutes to write down:
Don't judge yourself if something doesn't go according to plan.
Every action gives you information.
Use what you learn to adjust, try again, and keep moving forward.
