You have an energy bank. As you go throughout the day, your energy level rises and falls depending on what you do. Some things recharge your energy while others drain it. Understanding where you are leaking energy will allow you to better monitor what’s draining your energy bank. You must keep your energy levels up if you want to have enough energy to take action towards your goals.
The first place where you may be leaking energy is consuming media content. This can be scrolling social media, watching tv, reading or listening to the news, etc. These activities may seem mindless but your subconscious is exerting energy to process this information. What you see or hear evokes a particular emotion. One emotion might be happiness while another may be anger or sadness. These all have a major impact on your overall mood and energy bank. You may find yourself feeling drained after something triggers a deep emotion within you. Be cognizant of where you are spending your time consuming content that lowers your energy level and hinders your ability to achieve your goals.
Next, you might be leaking energy with other people. You may find yourself getting wrapped up in the gossip and speaking negatively about other people. This doesn’t make you feel good because negative energy only breeds more negative energy. Sometimes other people can suck the energy right out of you because their energy overpowers you. This could be too much negative energy that brings down your mood or perhaps it’s just too much excited energy that drains you. Either way, you’re left feeling tired, exhausted, and unmotivated to work towards your goals. You have to learn to protect your energy from leaking so that you’re actually empowered to take action towards your goals.
Then, there is leaking energy with your own negative thought patterns. You might be putting yourself down and speaking negatively to yourself. You’re beating yourself up with negative self talk and saying all the reasons why you can’t or shouldn’t go after your goals. It could be that you’re worried, stressed, anxious, or fearful about the unknown future events. You’re consumed thinking about all the possible worst case scenarios. You’re spending too much time on these negative, unhelpful, repetitive thoughts that are not serving you. You’re leaking your energy on overthinking and procrastinating instead of getting yourself into action. Action is what moves the needle to achieve your goals. Not spinning your wheels on unproductive negative thought patterns.
Lastly, you may be leaking energy with how you’re taking care of yourself. Or, more specifically, not taking care of yourself. Perhaps you’re staying up too late, eating unhealthy food, sitting on the couch and not moving. You have to take care of yourself if you want to have energy to work towards your goals. Maybe you’re saying yes to too many things and over committing yourself to different events or activities. You’re leaking energy all over! You have to take care of yourself and prioritize your needs in order to protect your energy level. If you’re maxing yourself out and spreading yourself too thin by working on everything else, then there is no way you’re going to have enough energy to work on your goals too.
Once you realize where your energy leaks are, you can work to cap them. It’s this image of a leaky bucket with a hole in in the bottom. If you keep filling the bucket up, it’s only going to continue leaking until you actually plug the hole. Work to plug your leaks. Then, focus on activities you can do to fill your bucket up.
Work to stop the energy leaks. Avoid getting sucked into the negativity from media, other people, and even your own thoughts. Focus on what you need to do to keep your energy levels up so that you can achieve your goals. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with too many things to do to achieve your goal, then create a to do list, and tackle one task a day. Commit to a specific bedtime and stick to it. Don’t stay up too late that you wake up with a bad attitude and negative energy bank. Do some weekly meal planning to feel good and keep your energy levels high. Get your body into some form of movement whether it’s walking, yoga, or working out. Remember the phrase a body in motion stays in motion! Have enough confidence in yourself to say no to things when you’ve reached your limit. Make self care a priority and take time to recharge. Plan time in your schedule to rest and relax. You’ll be motivated to work on your goals when you have a full energy bank. Find things that you can do to stop the leaks and increase your energy level today.
You have to set yourself up for success. Acknowledge the patterns, habits, and routines that are causing you to leak your energy. If you’re staying up too late and eating bad food then you’re going to wake up with a low energy level. You have to learn to take care of yourself. Prioritize your self care. Decide what isn’t serving you anymore and commit to plugging the bucket! Stop the energy leaks to ensure that you’ll have plenty of energy to work towards your goals each day.
