Being happy every single moment of each day is not realistic. Your mood ebbs and flows. There are things that make you smile, giggle, mad, sad, cry, or frustrate you. But, focusing on the good things in life, where the light is brightest, makes you feel good. Focusing on the negative moments, the ones with the dark cloud, the anxiety and stress riddled times are only accumulating more unhappiness in your life. Of course, you will go through difficult times. But, looking for the light, the little moments of joy, is where you can feel lighter and happier. You can’t rely on anyone else to make you happy. You have to find happiness in life on your own.
Think about what’s making you unhappy right now. Maybe there is something stressful going on in your life that you’re unsure or uncertain of. Perhaps it’s someone or something that’s causing you undue stress and anxiety. It could be putting a certain amount of pressure on yourself to excel or exceed an exceptionally high standard. You may be worrying about the unknown future possibilities that can send your mind down a whole rabbit hole of unhappy endings. Potentially you think that life is just not going your way. All of these things are contributing to your unhappiness.
It’s time to shift your focus onto things that do make you happy. Ask yourself the question of what would make you happy. Maybe this is more white space in your schedule for time to relax and recharge. Perhaps it’s spending time with friends, family, and loved ones. It could be you’re craving adventure and want to explore or go on a trip to see the world. Life experiences are something you’ll remember for a long time. Choose to incorporate more things that light you up and make you happy in life.
Next, decide what fills your cup. These are the things that make you feel accomplished and fulfilled at the end of the day. You feel like you did something you’re proud of. Maybe that’s learning something new, helping someone out, completing a goal related task, etc. Perhaps it’s challenging yourself to step outside your comfort zone and do something a little scary in order to grow. It might be a new achievement or you beat your personal record. Becoming a little bit better each and every day is what will make you feel like you’re making progress in life. You’ll feel good about yourself and what you’re doing. Happiness starts from the inside and radiates outward.
Then, decide how you’re taking care of yourself so that you can be your best. Consider what it would take to operate at your highest level. Perhaps that’s eating healthy food, working out, journaling, mindset work, taking a daily walk, reading, building healthy relationships with others, finding a supportive community, spending time on a new hobby, etc. In order to be your best, you have to take care of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Remember, what fills your cup, lights you up, makes you feel fulfilled and ultimately happy at the end of the day.
Lastly, create your action plan of what can you do to be happier right now in this very minute. Whatever is on your mind that’s causing you stress and anxiety, think about how you can release it. Let go of what’s not serving you so that you can let in more joy, happiness, and light. Shine light on the things that are bringing you down. Build yourself up by taking care of yourself and focusing on what you can do right now to improve your level of happiness.
Happiness can happen at any moment. Maybe someone says or does something funny. It could be you just remember a flashback to a happy moment from your past. Perhaps you’re looking forward to something in the future. Finding ways to be happy in the present is what’s going to elevate your life and take you to the next level. Remaining in the dark cloud of unhappiness will only keep you stuck in a life where all you can see is what’s not going right. Choose to focus on even the tiniest of things that is working and do more of the things that make you happy in life. When you’re happy, life feels better and you’re more inclined to do the difficult work that will help you achieve your goals.
