How To Write A Letter From Your Future Self

Jan 13, 2022

It’s the start of a new year and you most likely have some big goals that you’ve set for yourself.  Maybe you’re feeling a bit excited or nervous about what you want to accomplish this year, which is completely normal.  But, imagine if you had a crystal ball and could see exactly how this year went.  Some of your anxiety and fear might disappear.  You can give yourself some reassurance about how this year will go by writing a letter from the future detailing the amazing year you’ve had and everything you’ve achieved.  Here is how to write a letter from your future self.

Set The Scene

Begin by finding a quiet place with a notebook and pen.  Maybe you want to light a candle or grab your favorite beverage.  Whatever puts you in the zone to visualize and write unapologetically from the heart.  Now, visualize it’s the end of the year.  Imagine your future self is writing some words of wisdom and advice to your present self.  Think about what your future self would say.  Your letter will be about the transformation you experienced from the start of the year to end of the year.  Write your letter as if you’re reflecting back over everything you’ve experienced this year.  The key to write this letter in past tense as if it has already happened.

Transformation

Remember, you’re visualizing from the future as if you’re at the end of the year already.  Start your letter by saying how you felt at the beginning of the year.  For example, you started this year with anticipation and optimism for what’s to come.  Now that you’ve made it to the end of the year, it’s truly been quite the experience!  Write about what happened this year from the perspective that it has already occurred.

Goals

Next, write down everything that you were able to achieve.  Get specific about the goals you set and how you feel now that you’ve achieved them.  Dream big and get enthusiastic about what you’ve accomplished.  Write about your most amazing year yet and all the things you were able to do.  Again, make sure this is written in past tense as if you’ve already done it.

Who You Had To Become

Then, think about who you would have to become in order to achieve these things.  Consider what advice would you need to give yourself this year.  Perhaps it’s that you needed to stop letting fear, worry, and self doubt hold you back.  Maybe it’s that you committed to your goals and created a system to avoid procrastination.  Or, you let go of perfectionism and caring what other people thought.  Write down who you needed to become in order to achieve your goals.

Closing

Lastly, sign off extremely proud of yourself.  No matter what happens this year you gave it your all and did the best that you could.  Sign the letter with your name as your future self.  Fold up the letter and put it in an envelope or just date the outside of the letter with the last day of the year.  Keep this letter somewhere safe so that you can open it at the end of the year.  Set a reminder on your phone to read this letter before the start of next new year.  You’ll be amazed just how much of your letter came true.

Set your intentions for what you want to make happen and how you want to show up this year by writing a letter to yourself.  Write this letter from the perspective of your future self who is reflecting back over an amazing year.  This will tell your subconscious what you want and what you need to do in order to achieve your goals this year.  You’re going to achieve some incredible things this year.  Write each one down because this is going to be your year!
