How To Make Your New Belief Stick

Feb 18, 2021

You have many beliefs.  Some serve you and help you to achieve your goals while others hinder you and prevent you from achieving your goals.  The key is to change the beliefs that are keeping you stuck to beliefs that will better serve you.  Forming new beliefs can be difficult.  But, there are a few things you can do to make your new belief stick.

Recognize The Belief

The hardest part is recognizing the limiting belief in the first place.  You need to be consciously aware of what thoughts are going through your mind.  Catch the thoughts that are causing you to believe something that isn’t true and that’s stopping you from making progress towards achieving your goals.  Once you begin to notice these beliefs when they occur, you’ll be better prepared to change the belief.

State Your New Belief

When you catch your limiting belief, state your new belief in that moment.  Teach yourself that this is not the belief you want to have and state your new desired belief.  It’s also beneficial to state your new belief in the morning and in the evening.  You can do this by simply saying it out loud or listening to a recording of yourself stating the new belief in a voice note.  Continually restating your new belief will help make it stick.  It will rewire your brain to start believing the new belief so that you’ll be able to achieve your goals.

Visualize Your New Beliefs

Now visualize your new belief and what it will make possible for you.  Envision what you’ll be able to achieve, what you see happening, the life you will be living, what you’re doing, and who you are being when you let the old belief go.  Think about how it will make you feel when you’re living the life you’ve always imagined because you took on a new belief that allowed that vision to become your reality.  When you start to visualize your life without the limiting belief that’s been holding you back, you’ll be able to see a world of possibilities opens up because you’ll no longer be held back by your beliefs.  Visualizing the future with your new belief will also help reinforce to your subconscious mind that this is what you want to believe.

Journal About Your Beliefs

Journal about the visualization of your new belief.  Write down what you saw and how it made you feel.  Focus on what your new belief made possible for you.  You can also do a simple journal process.  Write down the belief holding you back.  Next, write down why this belief is not true.  Then, write down the new belief you want to believe instead.  Seeing the thought process written down with your visualization will help make your new belief stick.

Be Consistent

It is said that it takes 21 days to form a new habit.  When in fact, at 21 days your brain is about equal to believing the old belief vs the new belief.  It’s easier to slip back into the old belief.  That’s why it’s important to keep reinforcing your new belief for at least 67 days in order for that new belief to take over.  At that point, your brain will finally recognize your new belief over the old one.  Be consistent and reinforce the new belief every day for at least 67 days in order for your new belief to stick.

Acknowledge The Process

Forming new beliefs is a reoccurring process.  Once you’ve overcome one belief, a new one will pop up.  You may even find yourself thinking that you thought you had already changed this belief but you’ve found it’s transformed.  The positive thing is that you’ve recognized it and caught it.  Now you can refute it and change it.

Old habits and the thoughts that cause our beliefs die hard.  It’s important that you focus on forming new positive beliefs rather than reemphasizing the current bad ones if you want to achieve your goals.  Start by recognizing the limiting beliefs that you have.  Then state the new belief you want to believe instead.  Visualize and journal about how it will make you feel to let the limiting belief go so that you can achieve your goals.  Stay consistent with this process for the next 67 days in order to make your new belief stick.  Lastly, acknowledge this is a process and new beliefs will pop up to keep you in your comfort zone rather than allowing you to achieve your goals.  Do everything in your power to change the beliefs holding you back so that you can finally go after your goals in life and live your dream life.
