Four Life Quadrants

You live your life from one of four main boxes.  Imagine a square box broken into four separate quadrants.  One line divides the box by if something is inherently good for you to expand your life or bad for you and is holding you back.  The other line separates the quadrants by your comfort zone of what feels good or not good to you.  Deciding which of the four boxes you want to live your life by will help determine your future.  Let’s take a closer look at these four life quadrants to help you achieve your goals and live your dream life.

Comfort Zone Box

The first box is your comfort zone which contains what feels good to you and is good for you.  This when you do things that you enjoy, light you up, and make you happy.  Such as, going for a walk in nature to clear your mind, using your planner to jot down all your tasks so that you feel organized, etc.  These things feel good, comfortable, easy, and sometimes second nature to you.  These experiences add value to your life and perhaps others.  These are the magical moments in your life that you want to do more of.  Living in this box gives you a sense of purpose and meaning.  This is the box you want to live in because it’s comfortable and feels good.  But, there’s more to life than just living within your comfort zone.

Growth Box

The next box is growth, which doesn’t feel so great but you know it’s good for you.  These are the moments when you’re learning and growing.  This often doesn’t feel good because it’s outside of your comfort zone.  It’s scary and terrifying because it’s something you’ve never done before.  You’re experiencing challenges and obstacles that are tough to overcome.  It can require a lot of hard work from you.  This is usually where you give up on your goals because it becomes too difficult.  But, this is the uncomfortable work that expands your comfort zone.  While it may not feel great, it’s still very worthwhile because the things you want most in life are on the other side of your comfort zone.  You’re going to have to spend a lot of time operating in the growth box if you want to achieve your goals and live your dream life.

Escape Box

Then, there is the escape box that feels good but it isn’t very beneficial for you.  These are your escape tactics.  Such as, when you use procrastination to scroll social media, watch tv, or do anything else rather than the more difficult tasks like working on your goals.  It’s when you complete unproductive tasks that give you a quick dopamine hit to make you feel good but it doesn’t help you to achieve your goals.  Maybe you eat unhealthy food or have an alcoholic drink to relax.  You seek the short term pleasure instead of recognizing how it deters you from your long term goals in life.  The escape boxes pushes you farther away from the life you want.  You have to pay really close attention and notice when you’re trapped in this box because you can easily stay stuck here.  Recognize when you’re using escape tactics so that you can shift yourself into another box by taking action towards your goals and the life you want to live.

Lost Box

Lastly, is the lost box where things have really gotten out of control.  This when you keep doing things that don’t feel good and are also not good for you.  You’re self sabotaging.  Sometimes that’s out of fear or judgement that you just keep repeating the same pattern that’s pushing you farther away from your goals.  You get stuck in a negative repetitive cycle that you just can’t break free from.  You begin to feel bad and then worse as you start to beat yourself up over your lack of progress towards your goals.  You feel lost, hopeless, absolutely discouraged, and even disgusted at yourself for letting things get this far.  You know you aren’t doing anything to help you achieve your goals or live your dream life.  You need out of this box ASAP.

Lines

The first step is to acknowledge which box you’re in.  If you don’t like the box you’re in then you must shift along the lines.  Maybe that starts by stepping outside your comfort zone and asking for help to get into the growth box.  The truth is, the lines that define each box may be there but they are imaginary.  The lines are simply made up in your mind.  You can choose to move into another box at any time.  The ultimate goal here is change the lines on the box.  The box does not have four equal quadrants.  Rather, your comfort zone and growth box should continue to grow and the time you spend in the escape and lost boxes should substantially shrink.  The more time you spend in the growth box, the more your comfort zone expands.

Some of the most amazing things are right on the other side of your comfort zone.  Push yourself to learn, grow, and do things that feel a bit uncomfortable but that you know are inherently good for you.  When you do, you’ll achieve so much greatness in your life.

Take Action Challenge

The Quadrant Shift Challenge

This week, your goal is simple, to become aware of which box you're living in.

Step 1: Identify Your Current Box

At the end of each day, ask where did you spend most of your time today?

  • Comfort Zone
  • Growth
  • Escape
  • Lost

Be honest.  No judgment.

Awareness is the first step to creating change.

Step 2: Catch the Escape Moment

Notice when you’re about to fall into the escape box.

Maybe you find yourself:

  • Scrolling instead of working on your goal
  • Avoiding something important
  • Choosing easy over taking aligned action

When you catch yourself in the escape box, pause and ask what would a growth box action look like right now?

Step 3: Make One Daily Shift

Each day, choose one small action that moves you into the growth box.

Examples:

  • Work on your goal for 15 minutes
  • Send a message you’ve been avoiding
  • Start before you feel ready
  • Try something new

It doesn’t have to be anything big.  Just take one intentional action to work towards your goal.

Step 4: Expand the Right Boxes

At the end of the week, reflect:

  • What helped you spend more time in the growth and comfort boxes?
  • What kept pulling you into escape or lost boxes?

Your goal isn’t perfection.  It's to expand the boxes that move your life forward towards achieving your goals.

Remember, you’re not stuck in one box.

You’re choosing it and you can choose differently at any time.
