Eliminating Barriers To Achieve Your Goal

Feb 15, 2024

Getting started to achieve your goal is easy when you’re excited and enthusiastic.  The toughest part is keeping that momentum going.  It’s getting up and completing a task each day that moves the needle.  You can quickly find excuses to not work towards your goal.  There are so many other things that sound like more fun or are less daunting than the necessary tasks to achieve your goal.  You’re going to have to eliminate as many of these barriers as possible if you want to make progress and ultimately achieve your goal.

Create A Plan

Begin by eliminating the barrier of not knowing what you need to working on to achieve your goal.  Do some preplanning to set yourself up for success each day.  Choose outfits, meals, workouts, tasks, etc. ahead of time so you don’t waste time procrastinating by trying to figure out what you should be doing.  Have an action plan to work towards your goal.  Know what actions you need to be taking each day that move you closer to achieving your goal.

Schedule It

Next, eliminate the barrier of knowing when you’re going to work your goal.  Block out specific time in your schedule dedicated to completing focused work on your goal.  Commit to only working on your goal related tasks during this time.  Even if something else sounds easier, more fun, or really tempting, make this time non-negotiable to work towards your goal.  This time should not be used to work on anything else except your goal.  Remember, you’ve aside the time for a reason.  Choose to make progress towards your goal by prioritizing scheduling this time in your planner.

Bad Habits

The best way to eliminate barriers to achieve your goal is to acknowledge what bad habits you currently have that are hindering you from working towards your goal.  Perhaps that’s scrolling on social media, having unhealthy food in the house, a messy work space, etc.  Decide what you can do to eliminate these bad habits.  Maybe that’s cleaning, putting your phone on do not disturb to avoid distractions, restocking your pantry, etc.  Work to incorporate new healthy habits that will help you to take the action you want.  Change your perspective by viewing this as a way to add more healthy habits into your life rather than simply eliminating the bad habits that are preventing you from achieving your goal.

Permission To Quit

Lastly, the most difficult barrier to overcome is not being motivated to take action towards your goal.  This elimination tip may be surprising, but give yourself permission to quit after ten minutes of working on a task related to your goal.  Please note that you’re not completely quitting your goal.  You’re just stopping after ten minutes of work for that day.  You’re still going to keep taking action towards your goal each day after that.  You’ll find that once you get started, you’ll be more likely to continue taking action.  You’ll tell yourself that you’ve already started, you’re already there, so you might as well just keep going and finish the task.  The hardest part is actually getting started.  Give yourself permission to quit as a way out.  This will take the stress and pressure off yourself.  You’ll soon realize that you’re not a quitter because you’ll be completing your goal related activity.  Just get started and the rest will follow.

Eliminate as many barriers as possible so that you can focus on working towards achieving your goal.  Create an action plan by preselecting the task you’re going to complete that day to achieve your goal.  This eliminates the barrier of not knowing what you need to be working on.  Next, eliminate the question of when you’re going to complete this task by scheduling dedicated and focused time into your planner to work towards your goal.  Then, eliminate the bad habits that are stopping you from working on your goal and replace each one with a new, healthier habit.  Lastly, find motivation to achieve your goal by giving yourself permission to quit.  But, you can only quit after you’ve given at least ten minutes working on your goal related task.  Once you start that workout or task, you’ll be more likely to finish it.  You just have to get started and keep going!  Use these tips to eliminate the barriers holding you back from achieving your goal.
